Bali is one of those places that are perfect for a family getaway from Australia. Bali was the first country we ever travelled to with the kids and it was also the trip that sealed the deal for a lot more travel with them. Our first trip to Bali was when our first born was 12 months old. We have since returned when the boys were older. Bali has so many hidden gems. There is something around every corner, so I am sharing some of our favourites with you. We had one week in Ubud and one week in Seminyak. What did surprise me was how different Bali was since we first visited. It is now super busy Bali and lots of restaurant and accommodation options. We stayed Royal Tulip Visesa - Jl. Suweta, Banjar Bentuyung Sakti, Ubud, Gianyar, Bali, Ubud, 80571, Indonesia Hotel Vila Lumbung - Jl. Raya Petitenget No.1000X, Bali, Seminyak, 80361, Indonesia We ate La Lucciola - This beachside restaurant is a must and the food was one of our favourite meals. Saigon Street - This was close to our hotel and had the most delicious Vietnamese food. Sea Circus - a very cool resturant with lots of options on what to eat and drink We visited Bali Monkey Forest - If you have been following us you will know our kids love the great outdoors and animals. The boys couldn’t get over the free roaming monkeys and loved the experience. Padang Padang - Gorgeous white sand beaches and crystal blue water. An easy day trip from Seminyak. Pandawa Beach - The beach is accessible down a few flights of steps. Our kids were older and managed perfectly. The beach is beautiful and the water crystal blue. We really loved Bali for a family holiday. With so many activities and sights to see, our kids really enjoyed the experience. Plus, with a six hour flight from Melbourne how could you say no!
This was our second trip to Palm Springs. Both short visits but a place that has our family heart. Palm Springs is a beautiful oasis in the middle of the desert. The smell, the sunshine, the food and the shopping are all super fun. It's no secret we are mid century lovers and so palm springs ticks all the boxes to be a favourite family destination. Joshua Tree Joshua tree is a quick 45 minutes from Palm Springs and a great day trip. We headed out just after lunch to avoid the heat in the middle of the day and to be in the park for sunset, which we had heard is amazing, and it did not disappoint. The Cholla Cactus Garden Trail was a highlight for the boys, where they could climb boulders, watch the sun come down and have an afternoon snack. It's hard to explain to magic of Joshua Tree. The feeling that you get when you visit this park is surreal and something that will remain with us forever. This is high on the priority list when visiting Palm Springs. We explored the main centre, where there was a night market on one night. There was fresh produce, singing and dancing. The atmosphere was electric and the kids had a ball. This visit we had a little drive around to see all the mid century architecture. These houses are amazing and mid century is my favourite style of architecture. I love the light, the textures and the shapes. Moorten Botanical Garden If you love a succulent or two, Moorten Botanical Garden is a must visit. Filled with different succulents and filled to the brim with inspiration. This garden was great to visit. Palm springs is a lively oasis in the desert that we could visit over and over. It is a must visit with so many family activities.
Marfa was a surprise package on our recent road trip in the Untied States and one that we loved. Santé Fe to Marfa was a full days driving. The drive through the desert on dusk was a surreal experience. The light was like nothing I have ever seen before and the empty paddocks where literally glowing. We arrived in Marfa late in the evening just on Dusk. We stopped about 30 minutes out of Marfa on highway 90 to view the Prada Sculpture. To be honest, we nearly missed it. Situated in the middle of nowhere, this sculpture stops you in your tracks and does not disappoint. Marfa is said to become a Modern art mecca and one that should not be missed. The town itself had an underlying cool feel to it despite being in the middle of nowhere. We were lucky enough to stay at the El Cosmico. To experience yurt living for a night. It was like proper camping and this place certainly had a special magic about it. This overnight experience in a yurt went down as a family experience that we continue to talk about. The boys loved seeing wild rabbits bound around the camping grounds. The yurt was comfortable with an air-conditioning, which gave us relief from the heat of the desert and essential while travelling with a baby in a porta cot. After the kids fell asleep we enjoyed some much-needed beverages under the stars. There is something magical about sleeping in the Desert and El Cosmico did not disappoint. The next day we woke to a gorgeous sunrise and coffee on the yurt porch. We headed in to explore the town and fuel up on some much needed caffeine. The clean lines of Marfa coupled with the rustic nature (think tumble weeds) of a desert town create a magic I haven’t experienced anywhere else. This cute little town is perfect place to shop and explore some small and quaint art galleries. If you get the opportunity Marfa is a place to pop on the travel bucket list. This town is small in nature but huge in impact. This tiny little town still continues to inspire well after you have departed.
Mexico had been one of my dream destinations for a long time. I had a pen pal growing up in Mexcio and studied Frida Kahlo. Mexico had long been on our dreamy travel list. Our USA and Mexico was an all in one hectic trip. These are my personal outtakes on the trip and travelling with a nine, seven and ten month old. To be honest when we started our research we found little on travelling with kids and in particular babies in Mexico. We had so many questions about the access into centos etc. So I am going to cover off some of the information that wasn't available when we started researching our trips. We have mentioned it before, but we plan all our trips well in advance and we pop a lot of time into researching and pre-booking everything. This is very different to the way we travelled prior to kids but we have also worked out that things run so much smoother when you put the legwork in before you hit the ground travelling with little ones. Playa Del Carmen was our first stop. We thought that this would be a good place to base ourselves for some of the places we had pin pointed that we wanted to visit. I am not going to lie, my first impressions of Playa Del Carmen we're not what I had expected. I was very surprised how 'touristy' this little Mexican town was. We decided not to stay at an all-inclusive resort, as we like to wander and find the hidden gems. However the all-inclusive resorts seems to be a must do when travelling with kids in Mexico. We booked 5 nights at the Hotel Magic Blue, which was a little Oasis right in the hub and opposite the COCO Bongo Nightclub. This hotel was the perfect hub to return to and enjoy a swing in a hammock, a swim and a margarita. For a family of five we had to have separate rooms which we didn't realise when booking. Our children are still young and so we weren’t able to have connecting rooms. It meant the adults had to join the kids in a room each which was not ideal. Day trips We booked our first day tour and to be honest after speaking to a lot of travel groups not many were keen to take on our whole family of 5. So we opted for a private taxi booked through our hotel. To be honest this ended up being the best option! Our driver was so good and we are thankful that he to also had a family and understood our needs. Chichen Itza Our first stop on our day tour was Chichen Itza. We arrived there early to beat both the heat and the crowds... and hot it was! We lasted two hours with the kids. Their amazement soon turned to 'it's so hot'. Walking around with a baby was next level. We were so grateful for the advice to make this our first stop and the umbrella that our driver had provided us with to block out the sun. Cenote swimming Next stop was Cenotes and this to is something we were all looking forward to, plus was our chance to cool off. A centoe is a natural pit, or sinkhole, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath and they are spectacular with the clearest coldest water I have ever seen. Our first Cenote was nearly empty upon arrival. Our driver recommended that we go to the smaller cenotes to avoid the large crowds and bus groups. The water was super cold but so refreshing. Information regarding kids and particularly babies when visiting cenotes was limited when I began researching. While in Mexico we got to visit quite a few cenotes. Our baby was 10 months old and we were able to take her. We even did the cave diving, which I was super nervous about but she was amazing and embraced it all. The water is cold so after the initial shock she really loved the cold relief from our warm day tours. We did have a life jacket for her and recommend if you are travelling with smaller ones under 12 months to take your own fitted life jacket. But it was a highlight for our whole family to enjoy the cenotes. The walk to some is quite steep so we always had her in a baby carrier and held onto the walking rails. Again I want to stress this is something we felt comfortable doing with all our kids. They love the water and despite the super chilled temperature of the water, Coco loved every minute of it. I suggest to do whatever works with your kids but this was a favourite. Valladolid After cooling off we headed to Valladolid, a quaint brightly coloured Mexican town, for lunch. This beautiful little Mexican village is exactly what I had expected Mexico to be. We had wished that we had booked a couple of nights in this beautiful little place. We ate ice cream, visited a beautiful church and sat in the love seats. This day trip was a highlight for our little family, but it was a super big day of travel. We headed back to our hotel late with some yummy Fajitas. Coba Ruins Our other Day trip we did was Coba Ruins. This was a highlight and it was the ruins that our kids really enjoyed. We hired two bikes for our family of five, which made seeing and climbing the different ruins super achievable and also fun. The kids loved the pace of the bikes weaving in and around the leafy paths. They also enjoyed climbing one of the ruins, which had me shaking in my boots. Going up not so bad but the coming down. While in Playa Del Carmen we spaced our day trips with days by the pool and days to catch up on washing and work emails. We needed to slow the pace and our little one also caught hand foot and mouth, which also meant minimal sleep over this period. We loved the pace of Playa Del Carmen the Mexican food off the beaten track was amazing. It was certainly a great place to base yourself for day trips. If I had my time again I would reduce the 5 days to two days and head straight to Tulum, which was our next stop and a welcomed change of pace that we loved. Must see day trips Coba Ruins Cenote swimming Chichen Itza Valladolid We didn’t get there but was on our wish list was a day visit to Xcaret Eco Archaeological Park Eat We found some quaint little places off the beaten track that served delicious Mexican food. Stay Hotel Magic Blue - buffer breakfast was incredible as where there margaritas . The staff where super friendly and incredibly helpful . Transport We had heard lots of things about tourists being targeted by police and so were very nervous to hire a car. We found the idea of a driver and inexpensive and great way to get around. He was also able to show us some hidden spots for our family to enjoy and we could not recommended this experience more.
I recently had the chance to interview co-owner of Miann & Co and father of three, Terry, to get an insight into his life as a father. See what his kids say about him in the video above, and take a read to see his highlights as a father and how he'll be spending this Father's Day below. Enjoy What is your favourite memory of being a kid? Going on long car trips with my parents for holidays. We would leave very early, like 3 am and I can remember the excitement of being able to take my blanket and sleep in the car while my dad drives and there was no-one else on the road. What is your favourite memory of your dad? My favourite memories of my dad is mostly of him laughing. My dad is a real teaser and he teases till he gets a reaction. I remember how he used to always make me laugh and as a dad myself now, I can understand why he used to do it. It is one of the nicest things to hear your kids laugh from their stomach and just hearing them laugh is enough to make you laugh. What was one special thing you and your dad used to do together? My dad used to take me to work with him and I loved it. Being a plumber looking after the main supply of water to the town, he had to drive far and we would go off-road into the mountains to the river where the water was pumped to reservoirs and then gravitated to other reservoirs in town. Sometimes he even use to put me on his lap and I could hold the steering wheel to pretend I was driving. We would be out all day in the wild and being in South Africa there was always lots of wild life, especially Baboons that would cause all kinds of havoc at the pump stations. (So we would have to go often). I remember how nice it was to get out there and be totally alone with my dad and it just being the two of us with no-one else in sight. I would play all day and if we were there for most of the day my dad would make a fire and we would BBQ on it. What is your favourite thing to do with your daughter? My little girl is 15 Months and our third child. We have 2 boys whom are a little older, 7 and 10 years. I never believed it till now, but the relationship between a dad and his girl is very different to that with boys. You love them all equally, however girls seem to have dad wrapped around their finger from a very young age. I love just sitting with her next to me or on my lap (which doesn’t happen very often as she is very busy and doesn’t sit still) I love watching her experience new things, like when we took her to the beach for the first time. Seeing the expressions on her little face as she experiences stuff for the first time is priceless and something I want to hold on to forever. What do you enjoy most about being a dad? Being a dad creates a lot of enjoyment. I love seeing my kids grow up, but at the same time I wish they would stay little forever. I love hearting them describe things in their own words and it is very entertaining to hear the funny ways they try and figure somethings out for themselves. Their imaginations always intrigue me. I love being able to take them to different countries and travel with them, to see their faces when they experience something new and different. There is something so rewarding about hearing your kids talk about things they remember from previous travel destinations that you thought they have forgotten or did not notice. A dad gets to do all the fun things like trowing them in the air and catching them again, or spinning them round and round thill they hurt with laughter. What surprised you most about being a dad? There certainly are a lot of surprises!! No-one can coach you into being a dad/parent. Being responsible and caring for little people is by no means easy, but it is by far one of the most rewarding things to watch them grow up into self dependant human beings. I am always surprised to see my kids taking the next step and becoming more and more independent with each step they take. It is also scary and sad to think that they end up needing you less and less everyday. As a parent I think you have a constant battle of watching them become more independent, but wanting to have them depend on you forever and never grow up. How will you be spending this Father's Day? I’ll be spending the day with the family and having everyone around me will be enough. Anything we can do together as a family will make it a day to remember.
Sometimes you stumble upon a place that is complete utter magic, where imagery just doesn't give it justice. This is the amazing feeling you get upon visiting the gorgeous Temple Farmhouse. We were recently lucky enough to shoot our womenswear campaign in this beautiful house, perched on a hill and overlooking the surrounding farmland in Nashua NSW. It's hard to describe the peace and sense of calmness that one place can bring. You wake in the morning to wallabies playing outside and different birdlife frolicking on the surrounded well manicured lawns. Temple Farmhouse isn't an adults only retreat, which made us even bigger fans. They cater for all members of the family, making it one of the most family friendly places we have come across in all our travels. They have a considered pool with the most beautiful views surrounded by secure pool fencing , a swing set that overlooks the neighbouring rolling hills and an outside play areas for the kids complete with the most equiste tiles and outdoor play kitchen that will keep the kids busy for hours . There is a large kitchen and we recommend grabbing all your supplies prior to getting to the house, as it is a small 10 minute drive from town and once you arrive you won't want to leave. If you are looking for a relaxing getaway with or without the kids, this place is perfect to rest, recharge and enjoy. They have a large fire pit that again makes the for the most divine view and is perfect to unwind by. And a hit with the kids, where they can do some marshmallow toasting. While we were lucky to have three days to experience the joy of Temple Farmhouse, we left recharged feeling like we'd had a two week holiday. I have included the link here for anyone wanting to experience this little slice of heaven, and heaven it is with the kindest and most thoughtful hosts. If you are looking for a place that will hold those family memories tight for many years to come, this is the place. Thanks to the gorgeous Temple Farmhouse for sharing your special place x
Road trips are one of our favourite things to do and after a successful road trip two years ago through the states, we decided that we would replicate it. However this time with a 10 month old that was teething and wasn’t sleeping – not to mention juggling a heavy work load on the road for the first 10 days. Would we do it again? Absolutely, but not in the same time frame we attempted. We loved all the places we got to visit this time round, however we would just slow the pace next time, especially travelling with three kids. First stop was Los Angels with the kids and we all had jet lag on epic levels this time around. We stayed at the super cool Freehand Hotel as apposed to Santa Monica. We love downtown LA and we loved our previous and short visit last time. Had we just been travelling with our 7 and a 10 year olds this would have been the perfect place to base ourselves. However the rooms were small and with a baby it was more on the difficult side. Plus, the car had to be parked in an offsite car park making it that bit more tricky with our little one. I guess I forgot how much the small things make life so much easier when travelling with a baby. As far as location in downtown Los Angeles the Freehand Hotel was in the perfect position. So convenient being opposite the wholefoods and walking distance to everything we needed. Wholefoods is the perfect place to stock up on baby food, nappies and wipes. Day one We went back and visited the Grand Central Market. This was a bit of a favourite last visit. The hustle and bustle, the good coffee (hello jet lag) and not to mention great for fruit or anything else you want to stock up on. It was an easy walk from the Freehand Hotel and our first stop after wholefoods. We had a late lunch at the colourful Olvera Street, where we all had a taste of some great Mexican. This place was like stepping into another world and seriously so hard to believe that we were still in Los Angeles. After filling our tummies with mexican, we headed back walking the streets of downtown and checking out all the cool and very amazing street art. The kids were blown away. We had sunset drinks at the roof top bar at the Freehand Hotel, which is well worth a visit, but maybe without kids. We seriously felt a little uncool with kids in town but the views were well worth one drink and the kids loved the fact they got to have a drink around one very cool pool. Day one is always a 'take it easy day' while we all battle with jet lag. I have to say the youngest member of our travelling crew seem to adapt the best out of all of us. We headed into Santa Monica for a quick bite to eat at our favourite fish and chip place on the pier, the Albright. Their fish and chips is a must try and one of our favourites. No trip to Los Angeles is complete without a trip to the Pier. There is something magical about this beautiful lit pier at night. It really screams all kinds of kids magic and our kids certainly loved it. Day two We ate breakfast at the Freehand Hotel, who did amazing food and coffee and had a fantastic atmosphere that got us up and going and ready for the day. We visited the Los Angeles zoo for the day. Our kids loved this zoo. It was one of their favourites and our 10 month old also loved the day seeing so many animals for the first time. As we have so many different age groups in our family this was a great day for everyone, even for the grown ups. It was set out well and it was a full day of walking and observing. After the zoo we ducked up to the Griffith Park Observatory to witness the sunset and also see the famous Hollywood sign. It was beautiful up on the observatory and we all enjoyed walking off the jet lag. Dinner was at a diner in Downtown LA before turning in for an early night. Day three We lost track of time and Mr T had headed out for breakfast when I got an alert to say that we needed to check out. We thought we had an extra day and jet lag was playing full havoc on all of us. We quickly threw our things together and the Freehand Hotel where super helpful letting us have an extra hour to get our things together and check out. Jet lag had its full grip on us day four, however pushing through into routine was essential for bouncing back and bulletproof coffee from whole foods was on high rotation. My favourite places that we visited with the kids are listed below. Things to see and do with the kids Griffith Park Observatory Los Angeles zoo Santa Monica Pier Olvera street Street art in Downtown Los Angeles Grand central Market We stayed at the Freehand hotel Los Angeles. This hotel oozed coolness and the rooftop bar was great. However with small kids under 5 years I wouldn’t recommend this hotel. While super cool and the food onsite being amazing, the rooms are small and having to park off site makes unloading with a baby a lot more tricky in busy downtown LA. Great Places to eat Grand Central market that has so many great places to choose from. Freehand Hotel for a great and substantial breakfast. Olvera Street for great mexican food. The Albright at Santa Monica pier for fish and chips.
Sedona was Day 8 of our US Road trip. We got up early and left Palm Springs. The plan was to have a quick drive through the south entrance of Joshua Tree National Park and have lunch here. We could not get over the difference in the landscape from the north entrance - so much flatter, not so much of the rocky landscape and so much less vegetation. After a quick stop we headed off on the freeway to Sedona. We had a picnic lunch at an abandoned roadside truck stop. I am not sure what it was but this place - it was a little eerie, but so beautiful. The heat of the day was fierce. This abandoned truck stop made for a great place to stretch small legs and have a good break to walk around the area. We arrived late evening to Sedona to the glowing cliffs. We had no idea what to expect when arriving to Sedona. The flat desert and different landscape made this area beautiful. We stopped over at Bell Rock to watch the sunset and have a quick stretch of the legs before arriving at our hotel. We arrived at our hotel Sugar Loaf, which was basic in decor but had incredible friendly service. It had a pool and was walking distance to wholefoods and some great cafes. Our first night food was at an incredible Paleo restaurant that was walking distance from the hotel. The food was unbelievable and catered for the whole family. Our boys loved this place and I highly recommend a visit to Paleo Brio Healthy Kitchen when visiting Sedona. The next day we woke up early as you do when travelling with three kids, one being a baby. We had a modest breakfast at the hotel – the boys loved the pastries that the hotel provided. We walked to wholefoods to grab some snacks and much needed bulletproof coffee. We had been making these in Australia and to see these available on coffee menus in the United States had us so excited. To be honest we don’t plan out our days, which we should when travelling to a tight timeframe. We have places we want to visit, but also have to work around how the kids are feeling, especially when travelling with a baby. Some days we could punch it further than others. So today was one of those days that we pushed it. We had so many places we wanted to visit but were super limited to our timeframes. To be honest a good week is needed to explore Sedona at a manageable and happy pace. We hired an off road Jeep for the day through red rock rentals, which was also just up the road from us. We did this with all three kids including the baby. We had read on forums that some of the off roading was rough. I'm not going to lie, we took the easy family friendly routes and still some of them where very rough and dusty. Would we do it again? Absolutely. We fitted our car seat in and had a muslin wrap that we popped over the baby when it got dusty. Did they love it? All three loved it and it was a successful day out with the kids. Exploring off road was so much fun and the map was so easy to follow. We were nervous about navigating ourselves, especially off road with three kids. But to be honest, the company had made it super simple and provide you with a comprehensive map and photos. They also provide the kids with goggles and safety helmets. I cannot recommend this company enough. A half day was perfect for us. By lunch time, the sun got hotter and it became the perfect time to return back to our hotel for a bite to eat. We finished off the day at the Slide Rock. I would say this is a must with kids. Our kids still talk about this incredible place. Be warned it is 'touristy', but not to the stage that the sights cannot be enjoyed. The canyon is pretty breathtaking and a cold stream runs through the middle. The water is probably the coldest I have ever dipped my toe into. The name slide rock indicates exactly that - a place where people slide down the rocks through the rapids. Both our boys attempted it over and over and loved it. They could not get enough of it. We got around exploring with a baby carrier. The walk down to the canyon is easy but steep with full steps most of the way down. This was definitely a highlight of our whole trip and we stayed in the national park until close. We loved it. Dinner saw us return to the Paleo restaurant after a huge day of activities and exploring. Although we had two nights we really only had one full day of exploring. Sedona had our heart and to be honest it is definitely a place we are looking forward to returning to as we felt we hardly scratched the surface. If you are also on a road trip or passing by, this is a must do spot. We stayed at Sugar Loaf. This place was a little dated in décor but made up for it in incredible customer service. In my opinion, a great location and walking distance to wholefoods and some great restaurants, but also out of the hustle and bustle of the main street. We ate Paleo Brio Healthy Kitchen I highly recommend this place. We loved it and returned twice. We visited Bell rock - Beautiful place to visit on sunset and some great walks around the base of the rock. Red rock rentals- Incredible company and so helpful with the kids. We found the customer service outstanding and strongly recommend this company for off roading and Jeep rentals. Slide rock national park - Absolute highlight for our kids and a great national park. Don’t forget to pack your swimmers, a towel and a warm change of clothes. We could of spent a whole day here.
